Biker Boys

We are riding 4 miles three or more times a week. It's been fun!

Tonight the gentle rocking motion put Nolan right to sleep!

Obesity in America

On the national news last night there was a story about obesity in America. And the reporter said something like, "Americans don't realize the serious effects and limitations obesity has on everyday life". The irony was that I had just witnessed those effects minutes earlier...
We went to the park last night. We rode our bikes around for a few miles, fed the ducks & then played at the playground. While at the playground a man arrived with his two daughters. I would guess they were 5 and 7. The 5 year old was an average build. Dad and the 7 year old were very heavy. They arrived by car & Dad had a 44oz soft drink in hand from a fast food eatery. He immediately sat on the park bench to watch. (Here's the sad part) The girls got on the swings. The 5 year old took off, swinging high & laughing. The 7 year old tried & tried & tried, but she couldn't get herself swinging. Dad lovingly came over to push them both. But it broke my heart for her. And my guess is that she has a hard road ahead of her because of her weight.
I wonder how dramatically obesity will rise in the next generation as the world grows smaller, gadgets do more things quicker for us, food becomes more processed & "easy"...Ahhh, the widening of America.
